What to Include When Your Code Doesn’t Work
Most Python problems depend on the Python version, the library version and the exact error. With these four details, a problem can usually be reproduced and answered in one reply.
- The tutorial linkCopy the address of the page you were following.
- Your Python and library versionsRun the commands on the right and paste what they print.
- The code you ranPaste the code as text, not a screenshot, so it can be run exactly as you wrote it.
- The full error messageCopy the complete traceback, from "Traceback (most recent call last)" down to the last line.
Before you send code or screenshots, remove anything private, such as passwords, API keys, file paths with your name, and customer data.
Find your versions
- Python version
python --version - A library's version
pip show pandas - Every installed package
pip list
Where to find the error message
- Terminal or Command PromptThe traceback is printed right after you run the script. The last line names the error, for example KeyError or ModuleNotFoundError.
- Jupyter NotebookThe error appears in red under the cell. Scroll to the bottom of it to see the last line.
- VS Code or PyCharmOpen the Terminal or Run panel at the bottom of the window and copy the whole output.
- pip install errorsCopy the entire pip output, not just the last line. The real cause is often a few lines above it.
